Enric Novella
Biography
Enric Novella is a professor of the History of Science at the University of Valencia and a researcher at the López Piñero Inter-University Institute for Historical and Social Studies on Science, Technology, Medicine and the Environment. He holds a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Hamburg, a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the Free University of Berlin, and is a psychiatrist who trained at the University Clinical Hospital of Valencia. He has been a pre-doctoral fellow of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and a postdoctoral research fellow at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the University of Luxembourg. He has undertaken training, teaching and research placements at various universities and academic institutions in Europe, Latin America and the United States (Heidelberg, CNRS Paris, UNAM Mexico City, Tübingen, Cambridge and Harvard, amongst others). He is the author of the books *The Young Foucault and Psychopathology* (Berlin, 2008), *The Science of the Soul* (Madrid/Frankfurt, 2013), *The Psychopathological Discourse of Modernity* (Madrid, 2018) and *The Politics of Madness* (Valencia, 2023), as well as numerous studies and essays devoted to the history and philosophy of psychiatry, psychology and medicine — some of which have appeared in leading international journals such as *Medicine*, *Health Care and Philosophy*, *Health Care Analysis*, *Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics*, *History of Psychiatry*, *Social History of Medicine*, *History of the Human Sciences*, *Paedagogica Historica* and *Medical History*. Throughout his career, he has focused on the emergence and development of mental medicine, psychological culture, the psychopathological perspective, public health, psychopolitics and structural psychopathology within the framework of the two major historical-philosophical problems of modernity and subjectivity. He currently co-directs a research project on the culture of trauma and is interested in the phenomenology of health and illness. He recently edited the collective volume *La clínica de la subjetividad* (Valencia, 2025).
